Which .243 round do you recommend?

Well I have heard a lot of people say they think the .243 is not really a suitable deer caliber but a lot of people around here sure seem to take plenty of deer with them.

Anyways back to my topic. I have not bought anymore yet since sighting it in and was wanting some recommendations on the best brands/ grain to use while hunting. The guy at the store told me to stick with 85 grain and up but did not mention any specific brand.

I'm still new to this so forgive my ignorance.

Oh and me and my boy are ready to get out there. We saw our buck again today while walking the dog, we were about 100 yards away from where we will be set up and the deer was prolly 20 yards from our blind. Even if he doesn't give us a shot it will be fun for me and him to get out there.:thumbup:

Try Remington Core-Lokt in 100 grain. I used the same basic round last season in 6mm Remington with great success. The 2 does I took last year were with that round. See my gallery for pictures.

.243 is a great deer round. Aim high shoulder and more than likely the deer will fall in his tracks. Remington core-lokts, Winchester Super-X, Federal Power-shok, or Winchester PowerMax are all good choices.

Thanks for the quick input.

I used the Remington Core-lokts when I zeroed in the scope and for practice with nice grouping so I guess I will stick with them!

If you are using standard construction bullets I would recommend that you stay at or above 100gr weight bullets. When using high tech solid construction or when using a premium controlled expansion bullets the bullet weight might go down to 95gr. Lighter than this are really designed for varmit shooting not deer hunting. I would recommend that you pick a manufacturer and stay with it after you are sighted in with the load. I think if I were you I would look at the Federal loadings. Federals are now loaded with their new fusion bullets in their standard line. This could easily become the new standard of bullet performance at the basic pricepoint. Good luck and just have fun...

Another recommendation for shot placement is to try to put the round through both lungs. Did that with a doe earlier this season. I took off and ran, but it didn't run very far.

+ 1 on the 100gr remington, killed a bunch over the yrs. Right behind the shoulder, won't go far!
