the 150gr and the 165gr are both good choices, I prefer using the 165gr because the Black Bear season and the Vermopnt rifle season run together for 5 days
So if I get a shot at a bear I like having that little extra energy.

I personally use the Nosler balistic tip in 165gr in my 30-06s. I find that it shoots great and I have never had a bullet over expand or blow up. Some users have posted reviews where they did have problems but I think it was do to very high magnum velocities at close range. With a 30-06 you should not have a problem with either of them. I would try both weights and use the one your rifle groups the best.

I shoot 150 grain Remington CoreLokt in my 06. I have killed four deer with it. One dropped in its tracks, one went about 25 yards. The other two each went about 100 yards but left blood trails that were very easy to follow at a fast walk. Both were bleeding heavily but one left more of a blood highway than a blood trail.

ahhh..the ol' green tip....great round. depending on how much damage you wnt to do, and how far your shooting, we use either the 165 NBT or the 220 gr. RN

Hm they are fairly new to the market.i bought a box for my main hunting rifles 2506,3006,338 win mag and all with very good results!!my father cronographed some 308 cal and it is what they said about muzz vel. And super accurate!! I tried my hand loads and these for accuracy and the hornady superformance are right there with my hand loads!and the price isnt really any differance in price

i accidently bought some 180 gr. for my 30-06 one time. I really didnt like that weight. I prefer the 150 but sometimes the 165 is all i can find around here... (the 180gr just seemed alot more difficult to pattern.

I have a few boxes of 180 gr Remington factory ammo for the 30-06 if anyone wants to make me an offer. This is a weight that I have no use for. These boxes were my Dad's ammo and a little old school thoughts were involved. I would have to count them but I may have 4 boxes.
Alot of old school users prefer the 180gr round nose
Back 20 years ago at the hunter sight-in days there used to be a large group of a usually grey haired crowd of shooters that seemed to all shoot 30-06s firing round nose 180gr bullets. This was definitely the old school thinking that brush bucking was better with a heavy round nose. I am now over 50 and many of my friends now fall into that grey haired crowd. I think there is a place for 180gr in the 30-06. I personally would rather shoot an Elk or Bear with one than the 165gr I use on Deer. I would personally use a Nosler Partition pointed 180gr not a regular round nose conventional construction bullet. One thing about those old timers, they had forgoten more about hunting than I will ever know.

Grey hairs, I guess i'm that crowd too! The 180 was the desired weight back in the 60's Michigan camps using 30-06. Today's bullets are vastly better constructed and overall improved than the old core lokts but that's what they had and used back then. For elk I turn to the WM 270 with 150 gr.

165 is overkill for deer 85-120 is plenty to kill a deer
It may not be a science but...
I agree that it is possible to over think or over analysize hunting. The problem that I have is that there are 365 days in a year, I am luckly to get out actually hunting Deer for maybe two of them. I have to enjoy thinking,talking, and typing in the forum for the other 363 days or it would be a truely depressing world we live in.
