My wife is taking up hunting if she can stop shopping.... (it will save me thousands). She has a loaner for this year but I was wondering what ya'll would recommend?

Most of our hunting is 100 yards in, but she will be on the highline some so there is multiple opportunities for a shot upto 250 yds.

Anything lighter than a .270. That kicks a little to hard for her.

I'd suggest a .243 or a .260 , both are great calibers with excellent reputations.

I agree with BB and ronn, I'd throw the old 300 savage in also, virtually no kick and a great deer gitter.

I agree with Ronn and Bruce as those are great calibers for your needs. I would also throw in the .257 Roberts. It's an old one, but a good one!

Wow. I am going to start hitting the pawn shop. Hopefully I will find something special for her. If not I guess I could buy her a new one.

What about the 26-06? That is one that my Father-in-law reccomends. Any experience with that?

i think you mean 25-06 and personally i think its gonna kickabout the same maybe more than a .270 just my opinion i could be wrong

they are, but they work. careful sometimes they are very light and that isn't the best for recoil.

You mean the .25-06? They seem to use it a lot in Texas with great results. Can't speak from personal experience though.

But I'll agree with the .243 and .300 Savage. Have one of each!!!

has everyone forgotten the ol reliable 30-30? i use mine all the way out to 250. you can pick one up cheap, ammo is cheap recoil is not bad either

My wife uses a Remington in .243.Great caliber for people who don't want a hard kicking gun.

I talked with my daughter the other day and she'd just watched her hubby shoot their Marlin .30/30. The way the recoil jerked his shoulder (her words), she wasn't quite sure if she wanted to get behind it at all. I'm heading there (maybe) over the holidays and intend on bringing my Savage .243 along so she could try it out.

It took a couple rounds to ensure my .30/30 was sighted in before taking it out to hunt with. .30/30 kicks almost like a .270 due to its shorter barrel and "saddle rifle" feel (personal opinion here), but it didn't stop me from dropping that 8-point buck pictured in the gallery section with it. Trust me, recoil was the last thing I felt when pulling the trigger and watching it drop.

Personal recommendation for a woman would be a .243, since I've fired it and know it's recoil and stopping power using Remington Core-Lokt 100 grain bullets. Just for giggles and grins, has anyone tried any of the 'newer' Remington semi-auto's (Model 7400 or now Model 750) lately? I have a Woodsmaster that's a couple (okay, a few) decades old and wonder how it would compare with the latest in technology.

Go the 250 AI savage it reaches the 25-06 balistics but in a short action.

100 gr bullets at 3200 fps, low recoil and a very efficient cartrige!
