After 4 days of hiking and hunting in the Gila Wilderness I am back home. The weather was nice but very cold at night, in the mid twenties. I hiked about about twenty miles but it was all worth it.

I killed my first Mule Deer, it was also my first muzzleloader deer and I killed it with my own CAST BOOLIT! I did kill one with a car but that doesnt count.

It was a 3 x 3 that went about 165 pounds.

In my hiking I saw about 50 deer, 2 beautiful bears, one black and one cinnamon, squirrels and all kinds of birds.

As fun as it was, I am glad it is over with, I'm exhausted.

I'm impressed.I'd like to go west and hunt mulies sometime.
C'mon out. I can give you a few good spots in the Gila.

FG- they definitely are bigger than most whitetail deer. I can't wait to get back to the southeast and hunt them again even though they are smaller. Brings back memories of my youth. I loved going out before season to pattern them. That doesn't work with mulies.

My next hunt is for desert mulies over in Texas , they are not quite as big. Three more weeks... There are wild pigs on my lease, would be nice if I came back with one of each.

Give us some details on the shot.Distance, type of bullet, etc.

Distance was about 40 yards, homemade cast bullet out of a Lee mold. Bullet weight was 463 grains in a Harvester crushed rib sabot. Bullet diameter was .458.

The charge was 82 grains of Blackhorn 209. Chrony'd velocity was a little over 1500 fps.

The deer was broadside to me staring straight at me. I was covered head to toe with camo. He knew something was there, about 6 in the group all looking at me. I had enough time to pull the trigger before they figured out something was seriously wrong. There was at least one more buck but didn't want to take the time to figure out which was nicer. I had blown to previous shots trying to size deer up. The first one with antlers in My crosshairs is the one I took.
