Is it just me, or does anyone else get a thrill out of watching a hunting show or video and watching them cook a meal in a small, dumpy cabin more than the ones that are in a $300,000 log cabin with trophy mounts all over the place. And I usually love watching someone shoot a little 6 point if it looks like it was hard earned. It's much better than those 180 class bucks that are shot in a fenced in ranch.

Maybe it's because growing up in Western and Northern Michigan, the hunting pressure was so bad during gun season that a 6 point really did feel like a trophy.

And our hunting cabin, untill recently, had no indoor plumbing, just a two hole outhouse. There were so many guys that when I was finally old enough to stay there, I would sleep under the table so I wouldn't get trampelled by all of the old timers marching out for their midnight piss.

And you know what, those are some of my best memories of all time.

I LOVE the U P. That is some seriously remote country. I could be really content living there, but I don't thing my wife would feel the same way.

I went bird hunting at a friends cabin up there a couple of years ago. I met a couple of neighbor boys that watch over the place and within an hour I felt like we were best friends and that I had known them all my life. It's great meeting good people when you travel.

When I started this post I wasn't trying to bash outfitters or people that go after trophys, I would love to go on a guided hunt if I could afford it. I was just stating that it's also nice to see someone take a smaller buck and, I guess, hunt the way I grew up hunting. Anyway, it looks like this topic strikes a nerve with a lot of people. Good conversation.
