I went scouting today for Pennsylvania's upcoming Muzzleloader season. It will be my first muzzleloader hunt after many years of modern rifle hunting. The weather was great,67 degrees and sunny.I saw 8 deer and had to stop the truck to let 16 turkeys cross the road.

Good luck. This my second year of ml hunting. I switched because I couldn't draw rifle tags.

I went out a few weeks ago and saw deer and elk. I am hopeful this year.

We got our first snow last night, about a half an inch. I hope there is snow on the ground in three weeks when season opens.

I hunted PA for two years as a teenager around stoystown. Where are you at?

Again good luck and have fun.

Muzzleloader hunting area

I move around.I'm retired and like to take long drives in the country. This spot is actually public land south of State College. It looks like an old farm with corn, mast trees and grass fields.

3212, I've hunted the Dubois/Clearfield area for 38 seasons. Hunting in our area has taken a downturn for the last 3 years.

PA's deer herd

I believe the deer numbers are down from a few years ago.Private land seems to hold the most due to food availability and restricted access. The farmers in some areas do have problems with crop damage but are afraid to allow strangers to hunt due to liability and family members hunting.

We hunt all private property. We are also seeing less and less hunters afield. Use to see 30-40 deer a day and now maybe 2-3. Things have changed but don't have a good reason why.

A couple thoughts on deer numbers.I remember seeing alot of deer some years, but sometimes it was the same deer over and over due to other hunters pushing them. Also, now we have coyotes and have had years of liberal doe tags.I am not opposed to doe hunting,I like venison too much.I have seen how focused deer can be on a small area of crops, returning overnight after being driven out and shot at.A mile away you could not find a deer with a large group of hunters. That farmer needed relief even though the state land had no deer.It is a problem.
