I pick up a 30-30 from hunting buddy to do some re-finishing to. I left the bluing as is to retain that historic use factor. The old finish which was a re-finish varnish, was flaking off in many spots, so I removed it with de-natured alcohol but left the stock stain underneath. Currently, using Tom Kay's pre-64 Winchester stock oil thinned with mineral spirits at a 50/50 blend, which is a very close match to the original stock color. I have 5 hand rubbed coats on and intend to do another 5-6 coats. I'll post a finished picture when it's done and fully cured. I plan to end up with a nice satin oil finish.
