It was nice to finally be home on opening day of rifle season. Last year I was out in El Paso, the year before in North Carolina.
Was out in the blind at oh dark something. Could see something moving with my binoculars before it was light and was just waiting for daylight. As dawn started to break, I could tell it was a buck, but with the minimum spread laws here in the state, I had to wait for just a little more daylight before trying to squeeze the trigger. As luck would have it, the buck was quite smart and moved off into the brush just as it was getting light enough to see if he was a "keeper". Headed back to the house at about 0800 knowing there was always tomorrow (or maybe later in the afternoon).
The wind came up during the afternoon, and I went out more for an afternoon of relative solitude than to bring home a deer. Settled into the back of my "new" deer blind, leaned up against the corner for a nice rest. I was quite surprised when a nose appeared and then a pair of antlers. Boy did that pair of antlers get my attention. It only took about three or four minutes before I was presented with a 'perfect' broadside. The rest of the story is in the picture above.
