Obama and gun control

The individual right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the Constitution. While Barack Obama pretends to respect the Second Amendment, his record demonstrates that his claim is no more credible than a wifebeater's claim that he respects his wife.

Economist and gun control researcher Dr. John Lott recalled his first encounter with Obama. After introducing himself to Obama, "Obama said 'Oh, you are the gun guy.' I responded 'Yes, I guess so.' He simply responded that 'I don't believe that people should be able to own guns.'

'When I said it might be fun to talk about the question sometime and about his support of the city of Chicago's lawsuit against the gun makers, he simply grimaced and turned away, ending the conversation.'" [1].

Rich Pearson, who, "[f]or the past 15 years, . . . served in the Illinois state capitol as the chief lobbyist for the Illinois State Rifle Association" wrote:

"I lobbied Barack Obama extensively while he was an Illinois State Senator. As a result of that experience, I know Obama's attitudes toward guns and gun owners better than anyone. The truth be told, in all my years in the Capitol I have never met a legislator who harbors more contempt for the law-abiding firearm owner than does Barack Obama.

"Although Obama claims to be an advocate for the 2nd Amendment, his voting record in the Illinois Senate paints a very different picture. While a state senator, Obama voted for a bill that would ban nearly every hunting rifle, shotgun and target rifle owned by Illinois citizens. That same bill would authorize the state police to raid homes of gun owners to forcibly confiscate banned guns. Obama supported a bill that would shut down law-abiding firearm manufacturers including Springfield Armory, Armalite, Rock River Arms and Les Baer. Obama also voted for a bill that would prohibit law-abiding citizens from purchasing more than one gun per month." [2]

Obama supports numerous oppressive gun control measures. In April, an article in the nonpartisan website The Politico noted that "[Obama], as an Illinois state legislator and a U.S. senator, he consistently backed gun control legislation. . . . Obama has long backed gun-control measures, including a ban on semiautomatic weapons and concealed weapons, and a limit on handgun purchases to one a month." [3]

Obama also voted for legislation which would have banned the sale of almost all centerfire rifle ammunition, because such ammunition is designed to propel a bullet at a velocity which happens to be sufficient not only to kill game, but also to penetrate the lowest level of police body armor. [4].

The Obama strategy is similar to that of the repetitive wife abuser who seeks to recouncile with his wife after beating her. Flowers, candy and loving words are poured out by the abuser on his victim. The message is: "Pay attention only to what I say and ignore what I have done." Unfortunately, another beating will be administered in the future. As The Politico article notes, the Obama campaign's position statement on gun control parrots respect for the Second Amendment (while claiming "the right is subject to [supposedly] reasonable and common sense regulation"), but is silent on Obama's voting record. [5].

Should gunowners trust Obama? Only if they want to receive a beating.

He was the most strident candidate when it came to enforcing and expanding gun control laws.").

P.S. I often get the response that "Obama will not take our guns away."
I am an attorney. You have to be aware that it is not as simple as "taking our guns away" all at once. Chief Justice Marshall, the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court once wrote that "the power to tax is the power to destroy." He could just as truthfully have written that "the power to regulate is the power to destroy."

Obama and his Democratic cohorts can make life miserable for gun owners without banning a single gun or taking one gun from a private owner. They can do it through legislation or through administrative rules from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Division. Shouldn't gun owers pay for all that gun crime? How about a 500% tax increase on ammunition, as Obama supported in the past?[1] What about a $50.00 or $100.00 annual fee for every gun owned?

How about tightening up on those nasty gun dealers, i.e. if they don't do $100000 or $250000 of business a year, or if any of the guns sold by them has ever been used to commit any kind of crime, they don't qualify to continue their license. Just use your imagination. How about an arsenal license at say, oh $1000 a pop for everyone who owns over 5 guns? How about a nationwide ban on firearms dealers within 5 miles of a school or park, as Obama supported in 1999.[2] Do you get the picture? It's not "taking your guns", it's the death of a thousand cuts. It's all "reasonable","common sense" regulation. It's for the children!

This is a scary thing considering its looking like Obama is going to be are next president.
Gun sales have soared since Tuesday.
Here's 3 reason why it might have. You decide.
Hunting Season
Christmas shopping
Obama is president elect:surprised:
Obama is trying to eliminate guns...oh yea the Semi-automatic types. (The very same guns that are use in gangs)

You will still be able to keep and use your rifles, shotguns, pistols...ect ..the very same guns that you use for hunting.

Both of my parents joined the NRA on the 5th. I told them that they were a little late, but hey better late than never!

thats one of the biggest problems with the banning idea. Those morons that want the bans have no idea what they are banning along with the whole constitutional thing. that and the woefully incorrect notion that banning guns will stop criminals from getting them. pot is illegal and there is a lot of those folks around. look at the attempt to ban booze. What happened? the criminals and the Kennedys prospered. I find it hard to believe that there are twice as many non gun owners as there are gun owners or maybe i just can't believe there are that many idiots in this country that think everything is going to be butterflies and rainbows if they get this fool in office. if i offended any people that voted for this socialist guy we now have as a president....good and i don't care.

Very Well Said and I Endorse Ronn's message.
I agree!! Obama has no idea what he is banning!!! not only is he taking our guns but hes taking away our traditions, heritage, and hunting privlages for generations to come!!!!!!!! i think if obama had grew up hunting like many of yall did and like i am now he would be a completely different different person.
G
If he had, he'd realize that he doesn't need to create a Utopia through legislation or executive privilege because we are in it, if you look for it in the right places. The woods and personal freedoms being a couple places to start the search.
Darn it Ronn, You make me proud to be your friend. And here I was being nicer. LOL:biggrin:
Maybe he sees it as a free life insurance policy with all the threats he has recieved. Either way, him or nobody else will get mine. I will always use hunting as a source of food on the table and if all others will join the NRA and other gun owner organization we will always have a voice.
I think a lot of people need to chill on the rhetoric and pay more attention to the specifics.

I have owned firearms for personal protection and hunting since I first became involved in law enforcement more than 25 years ago. I spent a lot of time delving into Obama's stance on guns and what others have said about it.

Obama's stance on gun control is not what has been depicted by the NRA. Yes, he does want to impose restrictions on the types of weapons that can be legally owned, but none of his proposals address any traditional guns used for hunting.

Before Heller was decided he thought that jurisdictions, be they city or state or a federal district, could ban ownership of certain types of traditional firearms, but he has since made it clear that he accepts the Heller decision.

Yes, there will be a political fight over the "assault weapon" issue. And it is a fight worth fighting in the political and legal arena. But Obama won't be trying to limit ownership of most of the firearms the average gun owner possesses. So no need to run to the bunkers.

If Obama's position on the "assualt weapon" issue is going to be defeated then we need to focus on the specifics, rather than spreading hysteria. I heard some guy in Dick's today claiming Obama wanted to ban buckshot. That's a bunch of BS and deteracts from the issues that are real.

Stay informed and stay in contact with your congressional reps. But don’t go overstating the matter. No one takes a chicken little screaming the sky is falling very seriously.

:mad:Once the door is open it will never stop. I do believe you need to dig deeper past the fertilizer that his campaign is spreading. Most of what he is saying now is fog from bad breath.
wmi, you and I are the same page on this one, watch out America! He is filling his cabinet with Clinton people the most anti gun politions in America's history.
G
thats the same tripe the dems were squawking two years ago before they took over "don't worry we don't what to take your guns". bull!.... what happened ? HR1022, look it up I have, to reinstate the assault weapons band along with even more restrictions. the ruger 1022 would have been banded under the proposal. fortunately it die in committee because they figured going after guns then would hurt their chances in 08. so whats in store now that there is nothing stopping them. anyone in favor of banning any type firearm is a fool for thinking its going to solve the crime problem. a firearm is a tool like a skill saw or any other tool. the way in which it is used by those that under the law shouldn't have it to begin with is the problem.

the guy's voting record is clear regardless of what he says he will or won't do. hes a politician which means he'll say whatever he needs to in order to get votes. i think he did vote against buckshot in Il because i pretty sure its illegal there for deer hunting. lets pull up all the votes in favor of the gun owner, thats all guns, and his votes against and see which is list is longer. I think maybe you need to check his record in IL, cause there hasn't been much in washington for him to vote on even if he had been there to vote.

The man hasn't seen bitter, wait till a bill comes across his desk to ban 10 round mags or bigger or rifles with pistol grips or flash suppressors. bitter won't be the right word then. and guaranteed he will sign any bill that bans any and all guns. or he'll sign that same world agreement that Australia did that resulted in the lost of their firearms.

Your words are like the words a guy at my local gun shop, owned by a retired police chief, was spouting all over the place and how great it was that Obama got elected. He was told what he could do with the front stuffer he had in hand and asked to leave the store in no uncertain terms. one of my favorite stores. if it wasn't before it is now.

You sound like one of those cops, and I've met quite a few, that think because they are cops, they know more about guns how to shoot them and who should have them solely because your a cop. I have a lot of police officers as friends and have found that they, most of them, know less and can't shot as well as most of the guys that have been hunting and shooting from the age of 5,6,7. So bringing your service in public protection, which is commendable me being pro cop, carries little to no weight here with me.

sorry guys that just got me more than a little hot. defending Obama on gun control what a joke.

I have no problem being depicted as a "cop." My position in law enforcement required both a law degree and national security clearance.

We had a saying in the academy: "any retard can be trained to hit a target, the tough part is knowing when and what to fire at."

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Thankfully a majority of Americans did otherwise in November.
