Both of those calibers are great deer killers. I would consider looking at nice used rifles...you should be able to come in at your budget with an older top end rifle if you do.

Like you, I have been more of a bowhunter in recent years than a rifle hunter, but I am starting to get back into gun hunting a bit more.
