For those hunting in Illinois. A new rule for 2012 will make food scent attractants illegal. leaving only the pheromone or other sexual attractant scents legal. this was just passed down the the DNR officers around the 30th of August.

funny haw different states think differently
I have heard of other states considering the opposite
heard they are afraid of the herd contacting CWD through the scents
don't know how true this is

How would it be possible to attract CWD through smelling anything?

Wouldnt salt licks spread CWD as well. Since you have all the deer coming to the same mud hole?

gfd, it's very true many states are considering a ban on bottled urines because of the CWD risks at least until further studies are done to assure it's safe to use.
the same goes for scent attractants, animals dont just smell them, many times they locate and lick the scented areas as well and yes salt/mineral licks also raise risks for CWD,
basically any area that causes deer to eat from same locations like stumps, troths, buckets, piles, etc etc etc... those are example conditions that cause elevated cwd risks
so one can only imagine the risks that stem from say a scent wick dipped in bad urine.

yes to all the above. Anywhere they exchange saliva. Heck deer lick each other so it would be possible that way also. However, it would be no different when deer are mass feeding in a farmer's clover, corn fields or a good white oak acorn drop. If something congrgates deer into close proximity then you/nature run a risk. This is no hit against anyone planting/baiting ect just my thoughts.
