Well I am just starting to endeavor into the world of hunting along with my son. I am 27 and he is 8. We live here in north western Tennessee.

I have just purchased a new Savage 111 in .243 which fits both me and my son very well(I plan on buying another in .270 for myself when I get the cash). We plan to get out there and try our luck the week after thanksgiving.

I have scouted my hunting area A LOT and have found a lot of evidence of deer activity around the pond and the surrounding areas(trails, tracks and such). The spot looks promising. It is a natural spring fed pond which is about 10 yards deep into the woods off of the field. I have constructed me a blind from natural materials about 80 yards down wind of the pond at the next treeline so im looking across the field part and into the trees at the pond with the treeline to my back. Its kinda of nestled in a little corner of the treeline breaking up the fields.

Ive researched and researched tips on hunting and all till i could not stand to read anymore but I am always open for more beginners tips!

Anyways I am really looking forward to getting out there with my son and learning this sport together and hopefully putting some of that good ole meat in my freezer!

Seems like you have your ducks in a row. Now its just spending some time in the woods. You will learn alot from just observing while in the woods.

Good luck to both you and your son.

Well, congratulations on a number of things ---
You're out hunting.
You're out hunting with your son.
You've purchased a darn good rifle -- but was that a Model 11 in .243?
(Have a Savage Model 11 in .243 sitting in the gun safe is why I'm asking.)
Can't recommend anything that you haven't already done or hasn't already been recommended by one of the other guys above.

Best of luck to the both of you and above all - be safe out there.

By the way, also have a Savage Model 111 in .270 sitting in the gun safe as well.
I think the Model 11 is short action and Model 111 is long action.

It is the model 11fxp3. It came mounted with a bushnell 3-9x40. From what I have read it's a cheapie but all package deal scopes are but maybe it will suffice for now.

And as stated before I have invested in some scent spray and the detergent for our clothes. I also acquired a game cam to set up. It's an older one that uses 35mm but it will suffice for now.

Bubbachump I live almost right on the border of gibson and obion counties but am hunting in Gibson. We went today but no luck as some dog wandered up and was mulling around half the morning barking and carrying on.

Don't have a Savage, have a .243 that I got from my Grandparents when I was +/- 10 yrs old. Very capable round, mine is in a Remington Model 7... I think every kid in the family killed thier first deer with it. The best tip I can offer in response to your post were you said you scouted alot is - Be careful, they are not dumb animals. They will pattern you before you pattern them. Don't mess around too much and turn them nocturnal or make them leave if your area is not very large.

It's great that your son is interested in hunting, not a better passtime out there IMO. Good luck to you and your son. Almost forgot, don't get discouraged if you don't kill one right away....remember it's hunting not killing :)

Glad to hear of you starting out hunting. I'm sure it will bring you great joy as it has done for my family for generations. Keep the kids warm and comfy and make sure to point out all the other critters coming around he will love it.
