I have a Winchester model 70.I took the serial number to a gun dealer. He told me it was made in 1958.He had a referance book.Maybe you could try this route.
I have called the manufacturer in the past (call winchester) and gave them the serial number and they traced it for me and told me when it was made.

called winchester today. 1999 is the year and that series was made specially for................................................................................................................................WALMART! was hoping for better news but it is still an awesome shooter. it was rusted really bad and i worked most of the pits out and blued it. looks ok but had i known it was a walmart gun i might have not put that much time and effort into it.

i noticed on almost every other winchester there was a floor plate and this one not so
as long as it shoots straight who cares where it was sold through.
i have a few rifles and was lookin to trade for a high end hand gun. was hopin it was worth a lot more.
I bought a winchester ranger 120 20Ga shotgun for my daughter & I was looking for info on it NO help from winchester 3 people I talked to there never heard of it WHAT? sounded like they were all new there. I was looking for a barrel they could not tell me what models would fit it
they ended up telling me to contact midwest gun works pretty sad in my book
hope your experience was better with them then mine
winchester answered all my questions on the first call. they also told me there were some canadian models made that were made for the department stores had no replacement parts or any way to identify them
