I grew up hunting in ladder stands and I love them. I just don't feel safe in several of the lock-on stands, plus being a bigger guy I never feel like I have enough room to move.
My father and I often build fairly large wood stands (out of 2x4s). These are EXTREMELY comfortable stands to use on our farm, but they aren't easy to move. Only good thing about that is that we've had people try to steal them and they can't.
