My step son got a really crapy 12 gage shotgun from his dad. It does not have any sights on it. His dad also gave him a really crapy red dot scope, that does not work. Unless it's dark, you can't even see the dot anyway, and there is no consistency in his shooting with it..

I want to get him a decent red dot scope, but I'm not a hunter, so I know nothing about them. I could really use some advice...and quickly, cause he needs it before next weekend, when he is planning on going deer hunting.

I'd prefer to stay under $100, if possible.

Please....HELP!!!!

this is tricky first try MyOpticsPro.com second make sure the gun is sighted in befor he heads to the woods and wounds a deer ,what brand of gun is it?i'd be leary of hunting with a "crappy"gun.red dots are good for quick target pickup and arent as good as a reticle scope IMHO,nikon makes a good slugun scope ,you also need rings, mounts.those cantalever shotgun mounts are supposed to take the recoil well

There's no really quick fix, the gun needs to be sighted in, set it about 1" high at 50 yds. I assume the shotgun has a smoothe bore so accuracy will be compromised. 50-60 yds will be just about it. Hopefully, a better rig can come under the Christmas tree. I don't use red dot sights but for the current set up is about as good as any. Just make sure you know where the gun prints on paper prior hunting next weekend.

I don't find any red dot scopes on myopticspro.com. Do you know of a specific model that is good. I will help him to get it sighted in good.

I don't know what brand his shot gun is. And he has it with him, so I can't look. I will try to figure it out, and will post it, when I can. The scope is a gift, so I don't want to just ask him.

btw...thanks for the quick reply.

In your price range of $100.00 they will all be in the lower quality range. Personally I wouldn't invest 100.00 on a really crappy gun. The range will only be 50-60 yds, look to see if you can find shotgun fiber optic sights that you can attach to the barrel some way. Don't know what a gunsmith would charge to install a set of sights but thats the way I'd go. How about a gift card for $100.00 twords a better rig for next year. Maybe borrow a gun to finish the season with.

what makes it a realy crappy gun? is there somthing wrong with it, or are you just not a mossburg fan? i totaly agree, if the gun is junk i would not even invest $100 to get a scope for it, but if its a nice mossburg you can do tons of things with them to make them nice hunting guns.

First off there's no such thing as a really crappy shotgun, If taken care of properly, all shotguns perform well.
a shotgun, unlike a long range rilfe doesn't require an expensive scope you should be able to locate a good red dot scope for well under 100 dollars.

here's one example, theBarska 2X30 Red Dot Scope # AC11090 only 59.94 at opticsplanet with free shipping.

Good Luck...

I just had my first scope failure in all the years of hunting. It is the cheapest scope I own a Tasco 3X9X40 world class that was on my TC in-line muzzleloader. At the time its all I could afford. Well there's a reason its was not expensive. Just buy the very best scope/optics you can afford. I got what I paid for and now its junk. Tasco was sold several years back and will not warranty it.
