I'm guessing your shooting a compound bow ? A release does aid in smoother shoots and most people including me use them but, you do not need it to shoot better, if you are shooting bare finger you might want to start with a shooting glove. The leather will give you a much smoother release than your fingers and saves on finger fatigue on multi shots when practice. If you deside to go with a release in most cases you'll want to add a D-loop to clip the release to, you don't need it either but it helps take the wear off the string. And also you might need to shortin your draw leigth up one inch because of what the D-loop and release add to your draw, another reason to consider the glove first.
