well i been huntin for about 5 or 6 years now and i havent seen a deer yet. im gettin to where i dont want to go. i love to hunt but i hunt on a wma land. can someone please give me some tips on how i can get a deer please. thanks

first where are you? what state? what type of terrain? hard to give you much help with so little to work with. a deers number one defence is its nose, play the wind. know the land you are on, scout. their hearing is a little better than a humans but they are more in tune with the sounds in the woods, so move quite. their eyesight is real good for picking up movement and certain colors, move slow. know where they are feeding and how they get there. a pro hunter said once "you got to go where the deer are in order to get one". hook up with other hunters that you know to learn from them. many many books have been written on the subject so read all you can. a lot of guys here could write a book but it would take years to transfer all the knowledge a seasoned hunter has learned. i guess i'd say don't be in a hurry if it doesn't happen and work at it. if it were easy it wouldn't be worth doing.

i also hunt pub land... most hunters dont hunt more than 1/4 mile from the truck or camp... lazy... the trick is to go where the other hunters dont want to. go to mytopo.com and pull up a photo of the place your hunting. find a good spot right in the middle of the place. that does two things for you. 1 all the hunters on the edge of the hunting area will push all the deer further in to the woods, 2 you dont have to worrie to much about someone walking up and spooking deer. take your stand out a few days befor your hunt. find a "well used" trail, fresh rub or scrape and put your stand within eye shot of the deer sign. make sure to have 2 good enter/exit routes and get in about a hour before daylight and stay in your stand as long as you can stand it... remember if your not there you cant kill the deer. depending on how high you hang your stand you want to be as still as you can so dont move around alot. dont be picky with your first deer, drop the first thing that walks out.

Well I wouldnt say shoot the first thing that walks out. You dont want to kill something too young that might grow up into a decent buck if you let it go another season or a tiny little doe. Definatley make sure its worth shooting, but dont be picky in terms of not shooting at anything unless its a Bambi's dad.

take the one you want. flat top, 50lb skipper, whatever gives you a good clean shot. get one under your belt. then make the decision what you will take or pass. not knowing where you are not everywhere is like texas. only like 12% of hunters here in nh even get a deer so passing one may be your only chance all season. BUT on the other hand i passed on 4 deer this year here and i agree with idontlikeyou on the let them walk until the time is right but thats just me.

yup take one and feel good about it. Most hunters have filled a tag with what we term a samsonite carry-on, no need to drag it just carry it out, somewhere in their past, me included. I know, should drag it for safety reasons! put an orange flag on it. Anyways, good luck on bagging that deer.

call your local game warden of wildlife management office and ask them what counties have the highest deer ratios this will point you in the right direction .not all property is created equal some just dont hold deer .you need to find the deer before you can hunt them.I find the wildlife people to be very helpful and while they cant say sit here and you'll get one they do a good job with the info:wink:
