GPSs can be loaded with features or watered way down. All the ones I have seen show your current position as a point in the center of the screen. The first one that I bought, about 18 years ago, pretty much just showed a black line of where I had walked - it also recorded waypoints, etc. My new one shows topography and with an add-on software shows the land owners (names) of every piece of land in Montana. Some of the even newer ones will show topography and also an overhead Google photo of the same area. Prices range from under $100 to over $500. I prefer the Garmin products.
