I have what is now an older model Garmin map cs I bought two maps, a topo and an inland waterways for the boat. The topo map could be better but it is OK. If I were to buy a new one I would get one that had the topo and the arial photo.
Gps
I know it has been discussed here in the past but I'm too lazy to do a search but do all handheld GPS units give you the "satellite" map with a pin point directional thingy? Can you actually see the a ways ahead of you so that you know exactly where you will come out if you just start heading that way? Sorry for my ignorance.

I have a Garmin HC & downloaded a couple topo maps wish I bought the HCX which takes a memory card which = more memory for maps

GPSs can be loaded with features or watered way down. All the ones I have seen show your current position as a point in the center of the screen. The first one that I bought, about 18 years ago, pretty much just showed a black line of where I had walked - it also recorded waypoints, etc. My new one shows topography and with an add-on software shows the land owners (names) of every piece of land in Montana. Some of the even newer ones will show topography and also an overhead Google photo of the same area. Prices range from under $100 to over $500. I prefer the Garmin products.
