Got one with the Mosin Nagant

Well, right now is a antlerless deer hunt in herd control areas of Wisconsin. I've been hunting afternoons since Thursday and all I've seen was 2 bucks, until tonight. I got into the stand at about 4:30 tonight and it was pretty slow. I was expecting it to be another night of watching squirrels. At a little before 6:00 I peered over my back to see a doe walking between the woods and a cornfield about 50 yards behind me. I raised my rifle and waited for her to come into a small clearing I cut. When she came into the opening I clicked off the safety and let her have it, only to miss. She ran into woods towards me (as they usually do when I shoot at a deer on the edge of that cornfield) She stopped behind some brush for a minute or so then began running right at me. She slowed down at about 35 yards and this time I made sure I hit. I shot and she dropped in her tracks. The fun part began as I had to drag her up a hill about 150-200 yards to my fourwheeler by myself.. Exciting hunt nonetheless! The hole you see in the picture is the exit hole, the bullet entered high right shoulder.

Nice job buddy. I've never seen that kind of rifle/scope before but it has done the job well.

That's why I like using it. :yes: I really wanted to take one with my Great Uncles (whom has passed away about 10 years ago) Winchester 94 30-30. I took it out Thursday and Friday and since I didn't even see a doe I figured bringing this rifle may change my luck, and it did..lol

What kind of scope is that? And how did you mount it? Have a Mosin-Nagant at home with original 'woodwork' stock and open sites - not that it hasn't stopped me from bagging a deer or two with it. :wink:

Which model and year do you have? Mine is a 1943. To mount it the way I did it has to be a 91/30. There is a 3/8" dovetail under the rear sight, which is the same as whats on .22's and airguns. I removed the rear sight and put on the 1 piece mount. The scope is a Simmons Prohunter 4x32mm handgun scope. Since this picture was taken I have filed out a small notch on both sides of the mount so I can slide the front pin from the rear sight in it so there is no way the mount can slide forward. I have the rear sight pin installed behind the mount so it cannot slide rearwards.

Here's the mount - Leapers Accushot 1-Pc Mount w/1" Rings, 3/8" Dovetail. SCOPE MOUNTS.

Since you have the original stock with the top handguard you would want this mount - Leapers Accushot 1-Pc Bi-directional Offset Mount w/1" Rings, High, 11mm Dovetail. SCOPE MOUNTS.

I'm not at home as I type this, but I think it's a 91/30 manufactured in 1936.

Will definitely have to look into something like this when getting back home. Hate missing opening weekend and this is two years in a row that the boss has put me on the road this time of year. Will just have to sit the boss down and tell him what the priorities are between November and January.

congrats. I sold my 308 about 2 years ago because i hadn't been hunting but decided i'd go out this year. Picked myself up a mosin nagant for $100 and i'm hoping to have some similar luck. good to know other people have done it though.

This is my second one with a Mosin, it does the job quite well. If you haven't shot yours yet you may find it to shoot a bit high.

finally got a name set up on this. i shot a few rounds the other day and i think it was shooting to the right but i'm going to go out shooting again in 2 days to test again. I was in very unideal conditions, target wasn't staying mounted and it was really windy. i'm hoping the mosin works out for me. i haven't been hunting in 5 years so i'm pretty jacked to go back out.

I get more of a rush taking a deer with one of these "old war guns" than I do with some modern rifle with a high powered scope. Have you cleaned the cosmoline out from your Mosin yet?

Yes i did clean it out and i feel exactly the same way. I'm partially mad i got rid of my 308 cuz the rounds r easier to find than for my mosin, Fleet Farm is the only local place that has them, but at the same time the mosin just has my feel to it. Its just a gun that's been through hell and i feel like i know will work. I'll obviously take good care of it but i dont want to have to baby a gun either to where i feel like i can't shoot it ever and thats how most hunting rifles make me feel.

Using your old war-horses

It is great that you are getting out and hunting. I personally prefer knowing that I can kill cleanly any Deer that I get a chance at. The rifles that I carry are very accurate and are dialed in with their scope. If I have to slip a bullet into an opening, and I miss it won't be because of the rifle. I to love to shoot the old war-horses, but I will stay with the modern ones when it comes to hunting.

for clarification, i have a 1943 mosin nagant with the original stock, so which mount would i want for a scope. you posted 2 and i got a bit confused as you mentioned 3/8ths dovetail on the first one but said the second one would be suitable for the military stock.

Hi there I just stumbled on this site today....I actually just put a UTG tri-mount that replaces the rear leaf sight and mounted an ncstar 2-7x32 pistol scope. I just bore sighted it and all I have to do is fine tune it. So far I am liking this setup.

If you have the original stock you will want the offset mount that I posted because the other one will be to long and your top hand guard will get in the way. Just take of your top handgaurd, tap out the 2 pins in the rear sight, slide the rear sight towards the muzzle off its dovetail, install the offset mount on the dovetail and put your top handguard back on again. I used the two pins to my advantage to hold the mount very solid....I put the rear pin behind the mount and I filed a groove in the mount to slide the front pin through it. Then you will of course need a handgun scope to use in the mount. Hope that helps.

That tri-mount is too "tacticool" for my taste, especially on a Mosin Nagant.

It doesn't look that bad....I took off the side mounts...those are no good...now it just looks like a regular mount.
