Hey all,

Name's Justin, younger guy looking to get into hunting. Avid fan of guns and history of them. My brother and I have been wanting to try some CA deer hunting, however getting info. has been slow going. I'm much more inerested in older rifles, simply for the history and character. I have been looking at older winchester model 70's in .308. good idea? If not what should I be looking for? I would prefer pre 1980(again no special reason other than the history of the gun) Tips on where to go in CA? Actually any help what so ever will be appreciated, have been lookign through older threads and have to say it's the reason I signed up.

Thanks,

Justin

welcome to the site. I really can't help you on CA hunting that area. I too enjoy shooting the older stuff especially pre-64 in winchester models and 1940-1950 savage 99, There are plenty of true classics that are pure quality with lots of characher ? spell to hunt with. If those rifles could talk the stories woudl be awsome. Good luck hunting and hope your successful. You'll find lots of good stuff right here by browsing through past forums.

"If those rifles could talk the stories would be awsome." I think it was put best in another post somewhere in these forums -- "It's about the hunt." THAT's what we have the fondest memories of later on in life (even if 'later on' is the next day retelling the story . . . for the umteenth time).
Would really like to listen to the stories that the rifles I inherited could tell - but only have the words of an uncle telling me how much my grandfather liked this rifle or that one. The real "favorite" is a pre-64 Winchester Model 94 - one that I'm sure will stay on the other side of the family (and I don't blame them either).

Best of luck this season!

In CA DO NOT HUNT A ZONE!!!!!!!!!!! A zone sucks horibly it is way to hot of a season. I would try going pretty much any where in C zone or going up to X3b. But if your looking to get an ove the counter tag I would suggest B zone. And just a warning Covelo is a spot that has to be hunted at just the right time probably at the end of the season or on opening morning not in the middle of the season.

I wish I knew what all this meant. Any chance you have a website regarding anything on CA hunting? Very new to hunting and have no idea where to look for info., grew up in the outdoors(camping, fishing, shooting small caliber rifles, handguns) but no hunting. Not much reference on this side.

Im hunting d zone this year also, and it is my first year so D14 was the only tag I got because it is directly in my back yard. Good luck if I come across anything I will send it your way some things I have already read are located on dept. of Fish and game dfg.ca.gov there is a deer hunting manual that was decent and the maps of zones. I am a firefighter and work with avid hunters so Ill pass along anything useful they share with me.
