[Southern Man]

Last Saturday was the 130th annual Fancy Farm Picnic. It's a fundraiser for St Jerome Catholic Church in a very small town here in western, KY. It's listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest one day BBQ in the world. Over 30,000 people attended throughout the day. One of the biggest attractions is the barbeque pork and mutton. 20,000 lbs of pork and mutton was barbequed. These are the BBQ pits...

They sold the BBQ by the pound or you could buy a meal in the cafeteria. All the vegetables are homegrown by the locals. This is the line waiting to eat.....

Inside the cafeteria (this is where I worked), a cameo of Connie (I'm sure she'll appreciate it, grins)....

Mid afternoon we have political speaking. It's a big event for the state. This year we had the Govener, senator Mitch McConnell, and the 2 guys running for the open senator seat, besides local politicans. As usual, it was pretty heated even without the angry southern sun. I couldn't get a good pic, it was crowded.....

And what would a Catholic Picnic be without.......bingo?

They always have a raffle and the first prize is a new car. This year was a 2010 Dodge Challenger......

They close out the day with evening entertainment, usually a local band and dance. This year it was Kevin Skinner (he's a local), winner of America's Got Talent. Personally I would have rather had the other local bands......

All in all it was a good day. It's always alot of work. The whole community comes together to make it happen. Farmers grow what is needed, the women cook all the vegetables and desserts, The men work the BBQ pits all night and everyone takes turns working the cafeteria or the numerous booths during the day. All proceeds go to the church. It's really amazing to see not only as a visitor but as a participant in all that goes on.

One final note....... The winner of the car this year was a mexican. LOL figures. He was a leagal tho. He's here on a green card as a tobacco worker.

Was that BBQ ever on the Food Network or Travel Channel??? I swear I have seen something like that recently somewhere down south. Looks like a great time. I've also seen Kevin Skinner on AGT and he is an awesome, awesome singer with a great personality and a heart of gold. I don't listen to country music much but he is very good.
