I am hunting in a new location this fall and I am using a 270. My shots will be 75 yards at the most. What bullet will work the best? I have 130 grain core lokts that shoot very well, but will they still perform at that range?
It sounds like you hit up on a solid winning combination. The 270 Win is a great cartridge and is very popular because it works. The 130gr load is one of the most popular along with the 140gr for Deer. Most posts I have read said if they get good groups with the 130gr on the 270 they don't even look at the 140gr. The 130gr should shoot flatter than the 140gr due to it flying faster. But at the range you are shooting ~100yards it doesn't matter. The Remington corelocks are a solid bullet, they are not considered a Premium bullet but the Deer won't know the difference at 100yards. The really nice things about the Remingtons is your rifle likes them and these along with Federals are what usually go on sale at the big chain Department stores Wallmart, K-Mart, Target, etc. Don't worry about your choice, go buy 3 boxes of them at the store on sale. Then head to the range for some practice with two of the boxes, save the third for hunting. If you open the flap of the ammo at the store you will see the lot number. I recommend that you try to grab the same lot number when you buy ammo if possible. It just means they were made on the same day, on the same machine.
Thanks guys. I have tried 150 grains and they grouped okay, but the 130s have me better results. I was just unsure if the core lokt would hold together well at closer ranges. I bought 4 boxes at dunhams and was hoping they would work well at the shorter ranges. I have tried the ballistic tips before, but I felt in my situation they caused too much damage. I will stay with the core lokts and let you all know how they worked. Thanks again. Happy hunting to all.
coming to think of it....the only weight i use in the .270 is the 130 grains. have shot the 150, 160 and 180, but have no need fore it. the only other wieght i shoot is my 135 gr. Sierra BTHP match rounds used for my long range shooting......i have always used 130, and have never needed anything bigger. i catch crap from my boss that i dont use anything bigger, but around here i dont need it. hes an -06 guy... not a fan of Remington Ammo, but the Cor-Lokt will do the job from about 35 yards out to 300 or so. good choice on grain and cal. Happy trails and good luck!
I was given a box of barnes vor tx bullets in 130 grain from my father in law, and they shoot very well out of my rifle. I think its gonna be a hard choice, but the core lokts are ver nice too. They are also cheaper, but it seems they have a very good reputation for killing deer, so I might shoot more and see, plus I just like to shoot whenever I can. Good luck to all you guys.
am currently shooting the Barnes Vortx. .270win 130 gr. My Ruger M77 and my H&R handi rifle in 270 love them. they shoot very good. and that barnes triple shock from what i here is a devistating bullet. hopefully will find out in the morning. lol
