I was thinking maybe a Porcupine but even they aren't that aggressive, I doubt it was a Deer or a beaver,
A bear will scarth at trees leaving that type of pattern on the exterior bark but I've never seen a bear scrape into a tree that hard.
I'm leaning more towards a chainsaw too.
