Assult Rifle

iv been wanting an assult rifle for some time now, but not shure wich one i want to get. im trying to take all factors into consideration. like upfront cost, cost of ammo, availabilty and cost of high compasity mags, ease/speed of shooting, knock down power, and efficancy of use if need ever arizes were an assult rifle would be needed. with the highest of prioratys on cost of ammo, and doing its job as an assult rifle if need ever arize. the three i am consitering are the ruger SR22, an AR 15, and an AK47.
the SR22 is an AR style rifel that is chambered in .22LR. and if you dont know what the other 2 are than this topic aint for you.

cost is a real no brainer. the SR22 wins hands down costing only about 2 cents per round as aposed to the 20 or 30 cents per round of the other two. cost wize it could be the difference of a day at the range much cheeper. so i could shoot much more. and feel much less guilty when dumping hundereds of rounds down range at paper targets and such. no sence having a cool gun that you never shoot.

as for efishance as an assult wepon, if the need ever arizes. and the key word is if, so i dont wana hear any crap about being a consperasy thearist. id rather be prepaired for somthing that never happens, than not be prepaired if **** hits the fan. it could be as simple as a natural desaster, or teororist atak that sends people into a fend for your self, loot all you can situation like what happened durring Katrena. or say the left and the right deside they cant handle there diferences diplomaticly any more. to a full scale foren millitay invasion. i want to be prepared.

the SR22. is compatable with the 10/22, so having several 50 round drums on hand is a realalistic situation. and ammo being so cheep could alow me to have thousands of rounds on hand at any gien time. and ammo would also be the most available. (heck, you can even buy it at most small town hardwere stores). this would be the lightest waight wepon, and could carry hundereds of rounds without much waight if need be to be mobil. also with alomast no recoil i could send them down range verry quickly and acuratly. but being a .22LR there would be a less than desirable stoping power, and i would probably need to double tap everything.

on the other end of the specterum is th AK47. this would be the heavyest wepon, with the heavyest ammo. also the lowest availability of ammo. if you want a good deal on the ammo, you gota buy it online. spare mags arnt a dime a dozen. with the heavyest recoil of the three, acurate shoots would take twice as long as the other 2. but it would have the most stoping power.

the AR would be the middle of the road on everything exept cost of ammo. it aint much cheeper than the AK, and it would be alot more than the SR22. as for availabilty of the ammo you can get decent deals at wally world or dicks, but your best deals are still online. it would have much less recoil than the AK making it a much faster shooter. and more power than the .22. but with the price of the ammo i would not be able to have more than a few hundered rounds. and with only a few hundered rounds i would much rather have the knock down power of the 7.62.

First off for what you are describing the 22 shouldn"t even be a consideration.I own two ar15s both made by rock river arms. The ar would be your most accurate platform and the accessories for whatever you think you might need would be endless. Now the ar is incredibly accurate and a great rifle it just needs to be maintained the right way to ensure proper functioning.A carbine in a ar platform makes a great home defense weapon. If this is a go to weapon make sure you buy quality colt ,rock river arms, bushmaster.I favor RRA made in illinois as they come with the best trigger right out of the box.I have about 7000 rnds thru the both of them and have never had a single malfunction.I do however stick with quality ammo. Now the ak47 is the most reliable weapon ever made and for close quarters its has no equal. Its relability is legendary and it will take an unseen amount of abuse. Its downside is anything past a hundred yards is a crapshoot. Most aks will shoot 4-7 inch grps at a 100yds.As far as you being concerned about what people think of your purchase the ar is the #1 selling rifle in the country. They are great guns and alot of fun.Hope this helps ya a little.

Out of your choices I would definately go with the AK,,, AND,, if you're interested here's a link to an American Made AK47, 7.62x39 Caliber, it's made by IO Inc.
(Inter Ordnance Inc., located in North Carolina) Price is somewhere around 400 dollars...

Good Luck
An "Assualt Rifle" is a fully auto rifle. NOT semi auto like the stupid anti-gunners like to call them.
wisconsin.im going to have to disagree with you on that one. and you guys can corect me if im wrong. but an assult rifle is a semi audo with a bayanet lug, flash serpressor and high compasity mag. these things were what was removed from AR's durring the assult wepons ban to make them legal again. the left likes to paint the picture that assult rifles are machien guns (full audo) to make people think that an assult wepons ban is ok " cause no one needs a full audo." in order to own an fireare with burst or full audo you need a tax stamp for them. even durring the assult wepons ban ifyou had the tax stamp you could get the full audo.

bruce, you say " out of your choises" you would go with the AK. the way you stated that leads me to believe you feel there is a better choise for what i want that is not in my list. if that is tha case i am open to sugestions.

Well, you call it whatever you want. I don't call them an "assault" weapon because thats what the anti-gunners call them to make them sound big, bad and scary.

P.S. - spell check is your friend.

I don't know if there are any better choices, that isn't what I meant When I read your post I was thinking about a wider range of Weapons that fit the AR styles very well like the AR15 style weapons from Panther Arms in the LR series.
OR you can check out this World Guns link which shows a ton of AR's to choose from... But with price in mind and cost of ammo's I think I'd still go with an AK type..

Be sure to look at the Simonov SKS/Yugoslavian SKS (Type 59/66) rifles in 7.62x39 also , those rifles can often be found for just a couple hundred dollars not a bad investment at all..
Saiga makes a 7.62x39 in semi-auto. Cost ~ $450. Inner workings are supposed to be direct replicas of AK-47, so that should say something for reliability. It's been highly recommended to replace my current "aging" varmint rifle -- M1 Carbine. M1 Carbine - .30 cal, 115 grain. Great out to ~ 100-150 yards. Made during WW2, it's still highly accurate out to those distances.

I like something in semi-auto for shooting varmints out here in the country. Varmints - 2 or 4 legged ones. :)
Hunt NH I would also consider a Ruger Mini either the 14 (.223) or the 30 (7.62x39)
I have a mini 30 with the ATI stock, laser sights (scope for hunting)
I also have 5, 20 & 30 round clips for it, bipod, flashlight,
Herter's rounds are on sale at cabelas all the time at about $3.99

i have consittered the mini 14 seeral times, and its still in the back of my mind. as you stated if i got it it could also be used for hunting with the right rounds, and i could still stock up on the bulk ammo for if its needed to be used as a wepon against 2 legged varmit. the resone it has not been at the top of my list is because it would cost just as much, if not more than the AR15. and due to my time in the Army the AR platform is somthing that i am verry familure to. one thing that might over come the fimiurarity is that AR's are verry picky about the ammo you put though them. are the mini 14's that picky about ammo? as for the mini 30. i doubt that will happen, unless 308 ammo could be put though it as well. reason being im not going to hunt with 7.62x39, so it would loose the advantage over the AK of doubleing as a hunting rifle, and sence nether would be picky about ammo, and im not familure with ether, and the AK would be about 1/2 the price i dont see a reason to get it unless it could be used as a hunting rifle as well.

yup just looked it up the mini 30 is 7.62x39 only. still consittering the mini 14 though.
Take a look at Stag arms also. I believe the AR platform is the best overall on your list. I will be getting one also, soon and will be in the AR style rifle. I consider an assult rifle to anything that's loaded and pointed at someone! :nerd:
Save up till you can get get a reliable firearm.if you want a 308 rock river arms lar8,armalite,bushmaster, all make 308.I would not want a mini 14 as my go to firearm.
just picked up a stag ar-15. flat top.
HuntNH why would you not use the mini 30 for hunting I use mine for yotes & is what my daughter uses for her deer rifle it is actually a very nice round plus right now the 7.62 ammo seems to be cheaper then the .223
I have seen very good deals on used mini's
My new Stag AR-15. in 5.56 NATO.

i guess the idea of getting an AR that is stamped 5.56 NATO is that it will also shoot .223. An actually if you check hornadys website the 75 gr 5.56 beats the ballistics of the 123 gr 7.62 x 39 all day. other then at the muzzle. .223 is nowhere near what the 7.62 is. but to keep some 5.56 ammo around would probably be a good thing. The mini-14 will only chamber .223
Generally it is a bad idea to shoot 5.56(m193,m855)especially in older rifles it is loaded to higher pressures.Modern ars from colt, bushmaster, armalite, and rra all have there barrels marked with suggestions of what should be shot. You should not assume your gun recommends to shoot 5.56.Military m16s are designed to handle the 5.56 higher pressure.
spiker-- just asking, kinda new to the whole AR thing. If the barrel is stamped 5.56 then it should be fine shooting 5.56? no where on the gun does it have stamped .223
