I know this may be crazy to some here but there have been 2 rifles that I have sought for many years and just last week finally got one of them a 1948 Sav model 99 in 250-3000. Well, the second one is a pre 64 Winchester model 88 in 308 win cal. Right now there are 2 very nice ones on-line at a popular auction site and yup started bidding on one of them a 1955, the first year of production. These guns have both been escalating in value for the last 5-6 years even doubling the collective prices. For those of us in our 50's and those a bit older can appreciate the pure huntablility, probably not a word, but you know what I mean that these rifles possess. I'm betting that the value continues to climb on both the sav 99 and win 88 and figure I can gain 50% on the investments over the next 5-10 years. A little speculation, but I've watched the prices for several years now and that's the direction things are going right now. Whether or not I get the 88 this time, I'll still try to fill my second dream gun soon. I can only compare this to collecting old cars just a whole lot cheaper to do. You just have to want/know the older stuff to appreciate the old time quality.

hunt nh, I agree as the last 15 minutes gets pretty hectic at times. One thing on these rifles is the seller sometimes sets the minimum bid as they know what their worth. This makes things less inviting for some and not a whole lot of bids go in. Right now all I did was meet the minimum bid and hope it's where no one else wants to go. I've seen the crazy bidding where people loose all perspective of value and should have quit but didn't driving the cost skyward.

nope, got into a bidding war with one person. :yucky: It was a dealer with more $'s than I wanted stay in the game against. I wanted that rifle bad and probably will regret not going higher. With everything on/with the gun the book said around $1050.00 or so. I dropped out at $849.00. It was still a good buy for the other bidder! No doubt they new it too. Now just have to wait. These come on line occasionally, it took me ten years to be able to get this close, savings, kids out of the nest stuff, ect. Will keep looking.
