6.5mm Question

I am looking to getting an all purpose weapon to utilize the weapon for hunting and to keep in the house for self defense, possibly even long range hunting. So far, I have looked at the 5.56, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8SPC, .308; I have looked at all these in AR style systems. I know a bolt action would be more sufficient for hunting, but i have been in the military for too long and me and the carbines have spend too much time together. After doing a comparison it came down to the 6.8SPC and the 6.5 Grendal. The 6.8SPC won but only because of one chronic statement which i heard over and over "6.5 Grendal's are good for long range, not short range."

****So my main Question is if a 6.5 Grendal can take down a deer at 700 yards, then why cant it take down a deer a 200 yards?*****

Longe Range

So no one knows what's wrong with using a long range cartridge for short range hunting?
6.5 Grendel is an awesome cartridge. I plan on picking one up sometime this year. It will have no problem taking down a deer from 10 yards to 700 yards (although I wont recommend you shoot a deer that far out).
Please rethink the 6.8spl. I was talking to friend which is a AR builder for a gun shop.He was telling me they were going to build a few uppers for several cal. for an upcomming gun show. When ordering barrels he found out that all barrel manuf. have quit production on all 6.8 barrels. They told him the 300 blackout is becomming so popular the 6.8 is going by the wayside. 300 blackout ammo is alot cheaper than the 6.8 and to change a AR in 223/5.56 to 300 blackout all there is is a barrel swap.Uses same mags and all.Changing to a 6.8 is more costly all the way around ammo and all.
Ballistics

300 Blackout wont work for me the ballistics state that the range capablities that I am looking for are just not there in the 300 Blackout.
For lack of a better words I like the 6.8spl, I just wish there was a round out there that could make it hit about 900 yards with more energy. And I like the 6.5 Grendel I just wish they made a subsonic round so if I did have to use it in house I wouldnt have to worrying as much about its penetration abilities.
So Im at a conundrum at this point with these two weapons
I dont think I'm asking for too much. I just want an Rifle with the look, size, style and feel of an AR Style, With the range and ballistics similar of a 6.5 Grendel, Less Recoil than a .308, with the avaliability of some sort of Subsonic Ammo. Thats not alot
Search over

I settled for a .308 just like everybody else what won it was the ammunition selection. Large Grain, Smaller Grain, Winchester's PDX1 personal defense rounds, Managed recoil round, Subsonic rounds the list goes on and on and on

For anyone else that is looking for a good rifle for primary hunting and secondary all purposes and all reasons. The solution to me was finding a lightweight .308 combined with extra magazines and a diverse ammo selection
And I like the 6.5 Grendel I just wish they made a subsonic round so if I did have to use it in house I wouldnt have to worrying as much about its penetration abilities.
You might want to rethink that.

A supersonic 5.56x45 round will penetrate less than a handgun round and 12 gauge buckshot (depending on what bullet it is loaded with of course).
