If you don't mind, what are the two rifles? Might make a big difference, excluding any sentimental value. Win model 70 vs a Rem 700 ect ect. I see no difference in choosing between the 308 or 30-06 just on use/face value.
Well....I'm not sure I "completely" agree with that. You shouldn't flinch no matter what caliber you shoot.but, the .308 is inherently more accurate due to less recoil(less flinching).
I know the 30/06 is a remington cannot remember the model not sure on the 308 I will ask him next time we speak..If you don't mind, what are the two rifles? That is not a bad idea Karl I may just do that. Both calibers are great. I have an idea, if possible why don't you and your father in law make a trip out to a local range. It will be a special time for both of you, and you shoot both. One will fit you better then the other, it is a weird thing but all rifles feel different. The one that just feels better for you will be the one to ask for. It may not be the one worth the most money wise, but you don't care. You will always be able to remember the time out at the range even if you don't shoot it alot after it becomes yours.
