.308 vs 30/06

Recently had a discussion with my father in law about what he is leaving me in his will. He has many nice guns but recently had mentioned leaving me a .308. There is also a 30/06 in the cabinet as well. Just wondering your thoughts on these two calibers? Obviously I will be happy with whatever is left to me but my knowledge of rifles is pretty limited as we are not allowed to hunt in my state with them.

If you don't mind, what are the two rifles? Might make a big difference, excluding any sentimental value. Win model 70 vs a Rem 700 ect ect. I see no difference in choosing between the 308 or 30-06 just on use/face value.
I agree with HM...but you can't go wrong with a .308 or a 30-06. A 30-06 will pack a bit more punch, but the animal wont know the difference.
actual rifles aside, just look at it this way, anything the .308WIN can do the .30-06SPRG can do better. but, the .308 is inherantly more accurate due to less recoil(less flinching).

Well....I'm not sure I "completely" agree with that. You shouldn't flinch no matter what caliber you shoot.
i should have worded that differently. you are less likely to develop a flinch due to less recoil. that sound a little better?
own both calibers but my soft spot is for the 30/06.it reminds me of the 45 now matter how they try it cant be beat.
I should get that Win 88 in 308 cal by Tuesday. I will give it a good workout and compare with the 30-06. Purchased some 150 gr federals just to get on paper because they were on sale for 12.95 a box.

I know the 30/06 is a remington cannot remember the model not sure on the 308 I will ask him next time we speak..
.308 is more accurate than the 30-06, but the 30-06 packs more power. This is why mosin nagants, which use a 7.62x54r cartridge are referenced for having the accuracy of a .308 but the power of a 30-06.
I have a suggestion on which one to pick

Both calibers are great. I have an idea, if possible why don't you and your father in law make a trip out to a local range. It will be a special time for both of you, and you shoot both. One will fit you better then the other, it is a weird thing but all rifles feel different. The one that just feels better for you will be the one to ask for. It may not be the one worth the most money wise, but you don't care. You will always be able to remember the time out at the range even if you don't shoot it alot after it becomes yours.
