Hi this is now my second post I thought I had my mind set on the 6.5x55 tikka T3 but the man at the gun store has advised against it for a new comer to hunting like myself and suggests I get something a little bigger e.g. .270 or .308 etc. for deer sized game. So can I please get so advice and knowledge on these calibers. ( also in my country New Zealand we are not big users of the 30 06 I do not no why but we are, and there is not much ammo avaliable for it so I would like to stay away from it at this point.) Cheers

the .270 has a great reputation for long range, flat shooting.
I'd go with the .270

as most know, i am a HUGE .270 guy. i had a post up a few days ago about the 270 vs. the 30-06. honestly, the .308 is a really nice round. however, if you are looking at a nice powerful, long range gun with a good bit of knock down power, i would stick with the .270. it really depends on how much you are willing to spend. there are .308 long guns out there that can reach out pretty far, ie. over 1000 yards. as for the .270, the farthest i have shot is 874 yards, and was hitting a 10" plate of 1/4 inch steel about 7/10 times. i have never had anything run on me with it. LOTS of knockdown power. as for the other cal., i am really not to sure about it. ill do some research and get back to you on that one. usually the metric cal. weapons are going to be an arm and a leg for ammo. Happy trails. hope this helped,

Brandon

my 2 cents on your caliber choice

I would go with the .308. Reason is simple you say ammo is a little scarce. At least say you can't get 30-06 the most popular big game round in the world. If you go with the .308 Win you are also buying the 7.62 Nato round which was the standard for US, UK, Ger, Austrailia, and I would bet New Zealand. I personally don't think if you shoot an animal with the .308 you will regret not having a .270 or 30-06.
