There's nothing wrong with using an AR for hunting. I wouldn't use an AR10 platform as they are heavy and unwieldy. An AR15 on the other hand isn't so bad, and there are plenty of different calibers...

It's the cosmoline. Get some mineral spirits or paint thinner and let all the metal parts soak in it for 20 minutes or so. That should get rid of most of it, has for my three Mosin Nagants anyway.
