Which is the best budget rifle
I'm looking to buy a new budget rifle this year and have narrowed it down to 2 different ones. My budget is about 350 I'm not opposed into buying a good used rifle I just haven't found any yet.

The savage-stevens 200
or the Rugar American Rifle

I want it to be in a .308 cal. any advice on which to get would be appreciated.

after shooting a 91/30 i purchased about 6mo ago i would say you cant go wrong with it

Don't ignore the Marlin XS7 in 308 Win
The two rifles you are looking are both good entry level rifles. I would add the Marlin XS7 into your list for comparisons. I have shot a couple of XL7s
both in 30-06 and they were good rifles. The Marlin XS7 is available at the 300-350 pricepoint.

The ruger all american would be my choice. The marlin xl7 is also a nice rifle.IMO you need to handle them both and see which one feels and shoulders the best for you. Good luck this season with which ever one you decide on

Well I Purchased the American in .308 for my daughters & I personally love it along with my kids. feels great, trigger is incredible, bolt is smooth (little loud working when it is new) & grouping is amazing for a low priced rifle. it groups as good as my M77 & even in the .30-06 recoil is not bad Ruger put a very nice recoil pad on it

Awsome, you do know why they call it the all american? cuz its all 100% american made. bolt, action, barrel, stock no imported parts

true but it is called the american because it is a rifle all americans could afford

I would shop for a better quality used rifle and leave the budget rifle on the shelf, just my thoughts. I don't own either of the two rifles being discussed but their not something I would be interested in. If faced with just the two, I'd probably lean towards the American, it has an appropriate name, but just not my cup of tea.

I haven't shot the ruger but I have shot the savage axis in .223 it holds MOA group at 100yrds. Its a budget rifle but for hunting the barrel would hold up to it just fine. Just for warning my Savage model 11 308 is around the same weight as the axis and its kind of a shoulder thumper..The most important thing is that the gun feels good in your hands and is comfortable when in the aiming position. Good luck.

I won't say it is the best budget rifle, but here is mine. It is a New England Firearms Handi Rifle. It is .30-06 and well within your price range. And you can have barrels in other calibers fitted to it. I have only the .30-06 barrel for this rifle but I have another Handi Rifle that I have a .357 magnum barrel and a .50 caliber muzzleloading barrel for it.

I have fired the '06 nine times at deer ranging from 25 to 125 yards and have killed nine deer with it. None required a second shot. Some died in their tracks. Some ran but none more than 100 yards.

With the butt stock shell carrier I can get off a second shot almost as fast as with a bolt action.

My '06

My .357/muzzleloader. I have killed two deer with the muzzleloader.
