.243 Ammo Just bought a .243 a few months ago. Took it this past weekend to shoot it for the first time. Sighted it in a 100 yards shooting some Hornady 58 gr V-max and it shot pretty well. I plan on using it for deer this year, just curious what kind of ammo you other .243 users are using? New to deer hunting, still learning. Thanks |
The 243 is a dual purpose caliber The 243 is wonderful it can be a Praire dog rifle or a fine Deer rifle. The thing that must be changed is the bullet weight and construction. You are looking for a light highly explosive bullet for varmits. A light bullet going at a high speed drops less over a given distance so the hold is easier on the small Animals. When hunting Deer you are looking for a bullet that stays together and will penetrate into the boiler room for a clean kill every time. All the ammo companies make both types of ammo for the 243, the Deer loads start at 95grains unless they are special non lead core bullets. I am sure someone on the Forum owns one (huntingman) and can offer better first hand performance on this cartridge. Karl |
For deer hunting you want the 100 gr. Federal has 100 gr loaded with the Nosler partition bullet, pretty hard to beat the performance of Nosler. |
give the fusions a try,you wont be disappointed:thumbup: |
Bitterroot Valley .243 ammo using 100-gr Speer GrandSlam. Very nice load. |
Thanks for the advice guys. Shot my first deer with a .270 last year, but I really wanted something to shoot prairie dogs, deer and coyotes with. Besides, it's always fun to get a new gun! Anyways, very impressed with the feel of the .243, just feels right in my hands and shot very well right out of the box. |
try a .223 for that.they have some awsome varmit ammo in that cal |

Remington Core-Lokt 100 grain. They're relatively cheep compared to most brands and just as effective as the best of them. I've used nothing but Core-Lokt in .243 and .270 for the past several years. My $.02 worth . . . RR |
I like Remington 100 grain core-lokts.I've killed about 25 deer with them. |
