Great choice with the Savage. Have two in .270 and they're great for deer.

I don't think you'll be disappointed.

this i dont want. id like to keep some hides. what if i just go for head shots?

Same thing, you'll mangle it pretty bad. If you want a gun that will be good for coyotes and deer then you might want to look at a 243. It uses the same case as the 308 except it uses a 6mm bullet instead of 7.62mm.

Would this also be ok to hunt bigger game then whitetail?

Most people wouldn't recommend it. That being said, in Washington you can legally hunt any big game with a .243. This includes bear, elk and moose.

Personal opinion here, I'd go with the Savage 111. I've used mine quite successfully this past season.

That's my $.02 worth on this subject.
