I have a Savage 99 and it is a .308. Come to think of it, now that I have sold off a bunch of rifles, every one I own is a .308. For me, it is the most versatile of the 30's but that is just my opinion. I have killed everything from ground squirrels to elk with mine.

I don't shoot paper except to sight in so I don't worry about all that goes with that. I am not a "group" shooter. I seldom get a chance or need more than the first, cold barrel shot. As a result, that is all I care about. I sight in to shoot dead on, 1.5" high at 100-yards and get on with my business.

If the 30-30 win has taken more deer than almost all others combined, how can it not be named best ever from the hunting group? I'm not saying it is, just injecting more debate, Most popular round???? Best ever???? Come on...... The 30-06 started out life as a military round then made it to the hunting arena. What makes it your best ever award. I think it is a great round probably not the best ever though.

All I own is a 30-06....it's all I really know...I enjoy it much.

I vote for the 06 because of its versatility,affordabilty(ammo) and the vast amount of game it can take.While true the 30/30 has taken countless deer i dont consider it a great cartridge.In its time yes but it is limited in its range and its killing power.I think the other contenders to the 06 would be maybe a 270 or 308 but i still think the 06 is the closest thing to a one gun battery.IMHO

Depends on what part of the country you're from. Central Texas, the .270 is more than enough for anything within 300 miles. But then again, what other state can you travel 300+ miles and still haven't left the state??? But that's a different argument altogether!

My vote is for .270. Between the 130 and 150 grain bullets, they can drop just about anything.

I am with you my first rifle was my .270 & only rifle I use consistantly every year & was my only for a long time I have no issues if it were still my only one
the way I look at it they designed the .270 correctly the first time that is why you don't have a ton of choices in bullet weight you don't need them LOL
