Well they did call back three days later and said that they were out of the 30-06, but had two .270s in stock. My wife went right down there to pay for one. The lady behind the counter called back to the warehouse and was told that they were all out. They sold the last one two days ago. So why do they have to wait two or three days to even call me back? Why didn't they just call the warehouse when I was standing right there? I would have ordered it on the spot. Oh well. I walked into one of their competitors after work today. When I told them what I was looking for he punched it up on the computer and said that he had one in stock and asked if I wanted to order it. I told him yes and he entered my order right then and there. I should get it next week.

So I've been doing some more thinking and reading on my second barrel. You can see some more details here. A 44 Magnum looks like it could be a good backyard deer round. It would be about half the energy of my muzzleloader or a 45-70, but would still leave a big hole. Here are are some "generic" numbers that I found on the web. The 44 mag was using Remington ammo. I'm still excited for it to come in so I can go get it. The next decisions will be which scopes to get.
Rifle Ballistics Summary
44 Magnum Ballistics Chart | Ballistics 101

44Magnum - Jacketed Hollow Point - 275 grains - 931 ft/lbs - 1,235fps

For comparison, here is a 45-70.

45-70 - Hollow Point - 300 grains - 2,182ft/lbs - 1,810fps

Not sure but have you ever shot a 284 ? Real nice cal. I have shot a lot of elk out in Idaho flat shooter ant can reach out and knock them down at 700 yards.
The one I have is rare Husquarnava like the chain saw

Good Luck
I'd agree, but might look at at 35 Remington. Handles bears or larger game better than the heaviest bullets in a .30-30, but is still good for short range lighter game like deer.

Default It's Here

Well it finally came in. It is small and light, just what I was wanting. I really like it and can't wait to get it all set up with a scope, sling and Uncle Mike's shell holder.

Well I just purchased the second barrel. It will take about a week to get here though. I went with the 44 Mag. I am curious to chronograph a 44 mag out of a long barrel. My brother's hand loaded 357 out of his Winchester 94 almost has the same energy as my dad's 30-30 Winchester 94. This should make a nice short range round that leaves a big hole.

I've also started on a drop point skinning knife for myself. After over 20 years of making knives, it's about time that I had one for myself. This may be the year that I finally get all "set up". I've made four boning/butcher knives for myself this winter and I have a long range rifle as well as a short range rifle. I still need to build a rack in the shop to hold the butcher table during the of season.

I'd go with 30-06. As long as u hit the deer it's pretty much dead. It's all your choice but I fins the 30-06 a very versatile round that can also reach out to those long ranges!

Just got the .44 magnum barrel today. Here is a picture of it on the gun and the .270 barrel above it. I still need to get rings and a scope for the .44 mag. I also made a paracord sling for it. It turned out nice and only cost about $7.
