Default Short barrel Ruger

When I retired 6 years ago the kids bought me a rifle.I had a credit at cabelas.I was thinking of my grandsons when I bought a Ruger M77 MarkII with a Stainless barrel and laminated stock. It has an 18 1/2 inch barrel in .243 caliber. One of my hunting buddies said "You're going to lose too much velocity with that short barrel".I've killed two doe with it .Both were less than 100 yards away. One was 140 pounds.I love the little gun, especially in the thick stuff. How much speed am I actually losing compared to a 22 inch barrel?

Most velocities are listed as being from 24' barrels. With a .243 (or similar) you can use a rule of thumb of about 30 FPS +/- loss of velocity for every inch less of barrel length. From 24" to 18" would then mean a loss of about 180 FPS or so. Each rifle is different but these numbers should be close enough to give you an idea and to re-calculate trajectory numbers, should you feel that necessary.

The game animals will never know the fps difference. Carbine length barrels have been around a long time with great hunting successes.

I much prefer a shorter barrel. That little loss in velocity isn't going to make a difference in killing a deer.

For 25 years I hunted with a Marlin 30-30 and killed 16 deer, bucks and does.It did not have the crossbolt safety and I sold it.This gun seems just as good or better due to the type of expansion on impact.
