| |  New Custom Rifle Build
Having a custom built hunting rifle in 7x57mm Mauser and it should be in my hands by next May. Here are some initial specs.
Shilen chrome-moly match grade barrel
about 24" from the boltface
98 Mauser action
The twist 1-9".
Timney Sportsman trigger
Model 70 style 3-position safety on the gas shield
The action will be pillar-bedded on aluminum posts, and the chamber area of the barrel and the front of the action ahead of the magazine gets glass-bedded.
Scope base and mounts will be Leupold or Redfield, with the action-bridge single piece mount and twist-in front ring, and windage-adjustable rear ring.
Richards Microfit stock in either American Black walnut, or English walnut, with rosewood forend tip and grip cap. A 1/2" thick solid rubber recoil pad and Monte Carlo cheek piece.
Hand-rubbed oil finish, of course!

boys and their toys! Sounds like a nice rig. 7x57 is another round that I've never owned nor had much interest. I hear it is pretty easy on the shoulder and is a great deer size caliber.

With 140gr Partition moving 2900fps + it is a nice versatile cartridge on deer and even elk, as well as being a great black bear and hog cartridge. Using the light bullets it will reach out and pop a coyote and varmints. Nice round for some applications.

My nicest custom rifle is also a m98. Mine happens to be in a close relative of the fine 7X57, the .257 Roberts. It also has a Timney trigger (they told me Canjar when I bought it) and it is sweet. Mine has an air-gaged Douglas barrel, but in my preferred 22" size. English walnut on mine and it's a very attractive piece of wood.
It certainly sounds like yours will be a very fine rifle after completion. There's little better to a big rifle fan than a nicely done custom rifle.  |

You didn't say if you were building a featherweight rifle or a standard weight one. I am guessing that with the 24" barrel, the barrel contour is not going to be thin. You are going to have a wonderful shooting rifle, the choice of a 7x57 is a guaranteed easy on shoulder one. I personally don't like moving through the woods I hunt with a 24" barrel, maybe your woods are more open.

Karl, I hunt I will hunt this year in Tennessee, Mississippi, South Louisiana and Arizona. Only Arizona is open but I do walk the swamps in South Mississippi hunting hogs.

I am not a great shot, a good cook, or all that smart, but I would love to tag along. To bad I do have a wife, mortgage, one in college, and another soon to be. It sounds like you will have some serious fun this year...

Yes, I am going to have some serious fun this year. Also, putting together information for some articles as well. I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to these hunts, after the load I have had at work - it is time for major breaks.
Even if I don't take the game I am looking for, the adventure and the hunt will be worth it. Maybe we can put something together for next year. PM me and give me your phone number and we can talk. I don't do guided hunts anymore, I know where I am going and what I am hunting and through the years have become my own guide. You might really like Arizona which would only cost you part of the gas, your food and Tag - logging would be taken care of and we would do some camping, but you would have to have ten days to hunt and four days for travel.
