Don't have a Savage, have a .243 that I got from my Grandparents when I was +/- 10 yrs old. Very capable round, mine is in a Remington Model 7... I think every kid in the family killed thier first deer with it. The best tip I can offer in response to your post were you said you scouted alot is - Be careful, they are not dumb animals. They will pattern you before you pattern them. Don't mess around too much and turn them nocturnal or make them leave if your area is not very large.
It's great that your son is interested in hunting, not a better passtime out there IMO. Good luck to you and your son. Almost forgot, don't get discouraged if you don't kill one right away....remember it's hunting not killing :-)
