In my opinion a 91/30 is too long for hunting, and yes I have used and taken a deer with one (last year). I would rather take my M38, but I would rather take my custom 91/30 with a 23" barrel over both of them.

the 91/30 is hella long. found that out today when i finally spotted a buck, but i missed, my aim sucks :( but it's pretty much been determined that the carbines are less adequate for hunting because of their lack of accuracy. unfortunately, as you mentioned, the 91/30's are hella long.
