Smile 30-30

sometimes i use my dads Winchester Ranger to brush hunt....im pretty dang good with it, but at 100 yards, we just set out regular paper plates (yes the ones you use at a cook out) and im happy as long as they stay in that. try the 8" and the 10" plates. as long as you can hit that, you can get a vitals shot and be good. we were thinking about putting a scope on it, but that takes away from the whole reason to use a lever gun..... that is probably my favorite close up/ brush gun out of our collection. and with a 150 or even a 180 grain, nothing will run from you... i reload the Nosler 170 grain Partition RN, loaded with 32.6 gr. of IMR4320. and have never had any problems with it. plus when we go back to where our tree stands are, we have bear in the area, so the ol' ranger still gets some time in the woods, and out of its holding cell. hahaha....

The 91/30's like the one in the top pic can be had for $80-$115 nowadays so $99 isn't too bad. Cabela's normally charges $150 for them which is an awful price. That M38 in the bottom pic I paid $200 for as they are more of a rare rifle. They're getting hard to find and this is the only one I've actually seen that wasn't on the internet. Even if you're not into taking them hunting they make a fun range gun. You can get military surplus ammo for about $85 per 440 round tin. Its corrosive of course so you have to clean it properly but nonetheless it's a fun, effective firearm.

Need to be shooting leverevolutions in that 30/30. will see a drastic improvement in accuracy. I scoped my 30/30 after shooting them. cloverleafs at 100 yds and can put shoots on a 4" steel spinner target at 200 yds.

I can't do 1" at 100 yds with a 30-30 but put a rear peep on it and 2" can be done. Anyone who is shooting only 8" at at best with a rifle at 100 yds should not be hunting with it! Game animals deserve a lot higher standard than that, way too much room for error and wounded game.

to get back on topic. I have hunted blacktails out in Oregon with an SKS. Short shots were the name of the game though. Gun preformed nicely. the best part about using that rifle was the durability. In Oregon you can experience 4 seasons in a weekend. And the gun maintenance in hunt camp was well below par. lol. Have kicked my bolt numerous times to chamber that first round then would work great. lol Winchester loads a nice little soft point in that caliber.

Ok. So here is the situation. I was excited about my find of the ammo. I have been wanting to shoot something other than yotes with it. I didn't and do not mean to offend anyone. I respect everyones oppinion. And that's what's great about america. We all have one and they can and will be heard. The moral is. I would never take a shot I couldn't make or even questioned. I would never wound an animal intentionaly. I found the nolser and a max and the sierras. I'm going to role some up. If it groups I will use it. If not the .270 is a go. If this offends you I'm sorry. But It has enough konettic energy to do the job at 75 yds. That's what I ranged the farthest one from me today. So if she groups at 100 with the scope. Its a done deal.
