hornady SST....

hey guys/ladies,

This is my first year hunting with the 130 gr. Hornady SST's. anybody else hunted with them? just want to get some insight into wound channels, etc. Thanks,

Haven't used the Hornady SST per say - deviating from my Remingon Core-Lokts to test out the Hornady LeveRolution rounds for my 30/30. The 160 grain bullet dropped the buck in its tracks, but I think shot placement (neck) had as much to do with that as anything else. I was quite impressed with the quarter sized exit wound, having only heard/read about the power of these new rounds. To me, you get the power/range of a .270/150 grain bullet out of a 30/30 cartridge.

I posted a picture of that buck last November in the gallery and you can see for yourself the exit wound. I didn't exactly go digging around in that area since it wasn't part of the field dressing process so I can't tell you much more about the 'wound channel' than I've already stated.

had tried shooting them rounds in my M77 ruger. My rifle didn't like them, also My H&R 270 didn't like them. Ended up sending the left over ammo back to Hornady, had them replace it with 30/30 leverevolutions. Did have both rifles checked over by a gunsmith, and found nothing wrong. My rifles just didn't like the loads.

how do you like those leverevolutions? drader said he liked em.......just trying new things out and wanted to get some insight... cause if i can find a good round for the ol' 30-30 to reload, other than the 170 gr. RN nosler partition id like that. cause those things arent cheap!

I've used Hornady SST's alot in 7mm rem mag and in .243. I've had great results both in accuracy and terminal performance. On thing to keep in mind with SSTs are they are meant to come apart on impact, so if your shots are less then say 100 yds DO NOT aim for the shoulder. You have to put it through the ribs into the chest cavity. If you hit the shoulder bone the bullet will probably blow up and never reach the lungs.
