Well, I just bought my deer/elk licenses and applied for an antelope tag (drawing) and deer/elk trophy area permits (drawings). I've got some bonus points for elk and deer trophy areas, so maybe this will be the year... I hope. Trying a new area for pronghorns. Perhaps not as good as the areas that I've been hunting in the past in terms of overall antelope numbers, but about 4 hours closer to home. Close enough for day hunts, which means I can go more than just once during the season, pick my days if the weather is bad, and save on driving time and ga$ money. I've had a couple of dry years on elk and pronghorns, so I'm hoping to turn things around this year. Wish me luck on the drawings, and I'll take care of the rest.

That's an area I can scout before the season, and I'll do that if I get drawn. Not sure about getting the horses in there as the road in is pretty rough for trailering - I already checked that out. There are a ton of deer and elk in there though. I'll keep you informed.

Is all western elk, antelope etc hunting determined by lottery systems?
granted there are probably variances by state.

but it seems like there is no such thing as going Elk hunting out west on a whim.

i believe co is over the counter elk and onehorse should be able to confirm or not but i believe mt is as well.

I have been watching quite a few Elk hunts lately, might like to give it a shot some day. just dont like waiting for confirmations and drawings.

It may also have gone to a lottery, but the two times I hunted with a guide in Idaho the outfitter applied for your license for you. He was guaranteed a certain number for his area that he guided. The last time I was on one of those hunts was 1990 so alot could have changed.

a lot of states have gone that route to get more out of state money. a good way to go i guess but it rules out the do it yourself type hunts on public land.

In Montana nonresidents have to enter a drawing for an elk,deer or antelope either sex license. The fee is $643 for a combination elk/deer. Just deer is $343; just elk is $593. If you contract an outfitter, you can get a guaranteed elk/deer license for $1250. Antelope drawing is $205. No guarantee tags for antelope even if you want an outfitter. There are also doe/cow licenses that are OTC: elk $273; deer $75. Doe antelope tages are also available OTC. Sorry, I don't know the price for these.
