Default Rifle hunting for Deer in Iowa??

I talked to a friend the other day that said that in the river valley you are allowed to use rifles to hunt Deer in Iowa. Does anyone know if this is allowed. My oldest is heading to Iowa State at Ames in the fall and it would be fun to hunt in Iowa for a change. Looking at the Iowa DNR website it looked like Deer hunting in Iowa was a shotgun only proposition.
