Default Scope?

I recently inherited a winchester model 94 30-30 (pre 64) I have not been hunting since I was a teenager, and am going to hunt here in central VA this year. This rifle has just the stock open sight, and when I took it to the range I was fairly acurate with that (well within the kill zone at 75 yards) however I am still considering a scope I understand because of the straight up discharge I can't use a standard scope what would you guys say is my best option?

its called a side mount made just for the 94. there are some screws to take out and replace. i would suggest you let a gunsmith install it but if it were mine i wouldn't do anything to it but keep it the way it is and keep in clean. maybe only hunt with it on nice days. it would be a shame to damage it in any way.

I have only shot 2 30/30's and neither were scoped. But I think I would keep it open sight. Just my .02 but if you want to I have seen that nikon makes good scopes for high recoil.

pre 64's got some real value. just wouldn't want to see it lost to modification. I have a mount some place for my old 94. it was a little awkward being on the side but it did leave the open sights open.

Greetings from Vermont New Guy, Welcome to the Club.
I agree with ronn but I'd also like to add, With a .30-30 you're probably not going to get much of a long range shot with accuracy anyway,
whether it's scoped or not.

the .30-30 caliber loses energy quickly, With a .30-30 my advice is to use it the way it's proven to be best fitted
and that's for shots at 100 yards or less. If you really just want the scope added for convenience
I wouldn't invest a whole bunch of money into the idea... I hope this helps.

Good Luck

Thanks. after thinking about it and looking at the gun this weekend. I really don't want to change it at all. It shoots great as is, and I think is mostly original.

Default 30-30

If you have a pre-64 Model 94 I would not do anything to it except keep it clean and dry. They have a good value right now. Read an article about them recently ( can't remember where ) but it stated that an original Mod 94 30-30 was worth between $1500 and $2000. I would keep it at home under lock and key.

I would give my "right you know what" for a pre 64 Win. No mods and keep it like it is and it will give you back a real good investment.
