Back up elk gun

Well, I am going with my father in law and he is very familiar with this spot. He has drawn in here twice before and has killed a good bull both times. We will be packing in on horses, so weight is a big issue. We will only take one pack horse for the both of us, and we have to bring 100lb. of horse feed. That doesn't leave much space for other stuff. I will carry the rifle on my saddle in a scabbard, along with myself(195lb), my pack (~40lb), and anythng else I am sure my old horse will be feeling the burn hiking up those mts.

From your description of what you have for stock, two riding horses and just one pack horse for two people, it sounds like you don't have room for an extra rifle. In fact, it sounds like you will be way overloaded at best. What will you do with an elk, or two if you get them? Hope you've got back up horses as you may need them much more than a bck up rifle!
