whitetails on the plains

Anybody have experience hunting whitetails in dry, treeless forbidden places like west kansas. Been here two years and can tell you most info on whitetail hunting is of no use here. home ranges are measured in miles not acres, scrapes or rubs, no trails. There are a few patches of trees and brush but almost never any sign in "areas of thick cover". in one area of a creek bed i had a camera and feederout sept to dec. lots of does, one young buck there all the time, and a couple decent bucks but only one pic of each in that 3 month span. last two weeks of november not one deer on the camera. The bucks act more like muleys except if they see a car from a mile away they take off.

I've seen that same kind of behavior here in parts of Montana. Herds of whitetails that will spook out of cover and congregate on an open plain, acting more like antelope than deer, where they can watch for approaching danger from thousands of yards away. Also seen really big bucks during the rut taking receptive does hundreds and hundreds of yards OUT of cover to literally treeless, brushless areas. My guess is they do this to get away from other bucks. But, from my observations, I would say that you should still start your scouting and hunting from where ever there IS cover and work from there.
