Default 7.62

I have a dumb question, more about caliber than hunting. I was wondering what the second number in 7.62x51 was. I see a different second number and I'm not sure what it is. If there are already posts about this sorry, but please let me know. Thanks for the help

I believe the second number represents the length of the case in millimeters. For example the 7x57 means the bullet has a 7 mm diameter and the case is 57 mm long. In your case, the bullet diameter is 7.62 mm and the case length is 51 mm. Hope this helps.

maybe this wikipedia, Caliber link will explain it best.

I believe onehorse is correct, the second number is the length. I sadly missed that day at school when they taught the conversions. 7.62 is 30 cal which is .308 clear as crystal right?

Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison.
Genesis 27:3 "The thinking deer hunter should mature through three phases during his hunting life. First phase, "I need to kill a deer." Second phase, I want to harvest a nice deer. And last phase, we must manage this resource so our children and their children can experience the grand tradition of good deer hunting." - Jim Slinsky

.308 is 7.62 NATO which is 7.62x51. The pig (the beloved M60) as well as its successor, the 240B are 7.62 NATOs.

And yeah it is case length in mm. My M44 is 7.62x54. Beullet diameter for the AK, SKS, Mosin, or .308 is the same its just what size the casing is.

AK, SKS = 7.62x39
.308 = 7.62x51
Mosin = 7.62x54
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
