All of us can learn new or safe tactics. I'm glad you responded in the manner you did as it says you are concerned about safety. Before we pull the trigger our minds have to process a lot of information in mili-seconds. It takes a strong measure of self discipline to not shoot in certain circumstances but that's what responsibility is all about.

Thumbs up Rifle

Many answers to what is the fastest handling rifle in Deer woods..................

Ruger 44 mag Carbine DeerStalker ( good 100 yard rifle)
Rem 760 Pump Carbine in 270/308/30-06
Rem 600 Bolt Action in 6.5 or 350 Rem Mag
Browning BLR pre 81 Model in 308 win or 358 Win
Win 71 Carbine in 348 Win
Win 94 in 32 Special
Marlin 336RC ( 1957 version) in 35 Rem

All these make a fast pointing and accurate deer rifle.
Peep sights or low power scopes in 1.5x5 range.

I do alot of just slow walking thru the woods (still hunt) and jump shooting was the norm. I used a remington 7400 in .308 win. , was set up with a redfield 3x9 widefield and just works great. In reality , its what fits you best which takes some trial and error. I also use a remington BDL in 30/06 which I love but I cant snap shoot like the semi auto . I have used a friends ruger 77 that seemed like a good quick shot rifle too.
