223 may not be legal in some states. I think it is not your best choise and I would really try to borrow a better rifle if possible. The 30-06 was your best choise but i understand it may not be available all times. If you do decide to use the 223 I would buy the heaviest bullet in a quick expanding design that I could find, sight in with that. Make sure its legal in your state. 223 just doesn't make for a great deer rifle. Sorry for the opinion but....

No dont apologize, thats what I was asking for. The Mosin is what I'll probably go with then. Thanks for all of the feedback from all of you. 180 grain SP in the mosins 7.62x54r is better than the .223 which the heaviest I could find is 75 grain JHP or SP.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

I think you made the right call too, even though I have used the AR, it requires precise shot management and a broadside target. The Mosin gives a little more leeway for shot placement and alot penetration through the brisket or shoulder.
